The start of a new school always makes me think through organization in my home. As kids get older their needs change, especially with homework. Working at the kitchen table no longer is realistic for my kids like it used to be. Kids often feel more successful and organized when they have their own space to be successful and work on their studies. My friend had a desk she had found that she was using for her daughter and the colors no longer reflected her style yet she still wanted that space just for her to work on school work.
The desk was in pretty rough shape but it wasn’t dead yet. Some new paint and knobs made this desk a showstopper. Plus using chalk based paint made this project quick and easy. I know chalk based paint boasts of no sanding needed but keep in mind if the surface isn’t awesome your finish isn’t going to be awesome. Chalk based paint covers a multitude of blemishes but not uneven or bumpy surfaces. Because of that, I did give everything a quick run over with my sander to even out the surface. It looks like this desk was definitely no stranger to paint!
But it never saw coral until now!
The beauty of using chalk based paint is it dries so quickly which allows you to complete projects in record time. Since it was a dark color paint underneath it did take me several coats but it was really quick since it dries so quickly.
Since the drawers were in rough shape too I painted them as well. Then I picked up some pretty cotton fabric from Jo-Ann and used Mod Podge to adhere it. it made for beautiful drawer liners.
Once dry I decided to use my Silhouette to cut out a vinyl stencil to embellish the top with my friend’s daughter’s name. I used gold Krylon spray paint with the stencil. Coral + gold = swoon!
I added some rose knobs from Jo-Ann (check out their new line of knobs in the store!) to add a little feminine whimsy.
As you can see in the pictures the desk still has some bumps and knicks. But as one of my friend’s say “It doesn’t have to be perfect, to be beautiful!â€
I also quickly sprayed the chair with the coordinating Krylon gold spray paint.
Let’s be reminded of where we came from…
To this beautiful, updated personalized masterpiece.
What an improvement and a great new place to welcome Tessa Faith into her room to study and work on her homework.
This is so cute not to love! I love the colors!
