Hey there and Merry Christmas! It’s Carmel from Our Fifth House and I’m back today sharing an easy update I made to our old nativity set. This set is really special to us as it was a wedding present. It’s hard to believe but it’s almost 14 years old now! Time flies when you’re having fun.
I’ve wanted to give it a little update for years now. I was going for a classic look with somewhat of an antique vibe, but wasn’t exactly sure how to go about it until I discovered the awesomeness of Krylon’s Looking Glass Spray Paint.
I was able to give this old ceramic set a sort of faux mercury glass look, and I’m really pleased with the end result. It has sort of an old pewter-y look that I really really love! Looking Glass spray paint is really intended for use on glass, but I’ve discovered that it plays quite nicely with other materials as well. This set had a matte ceramic finish, so I didn’t bother using a primer.
These are the supplies I used to create the look.
The process was really simple.
1. I sprayed about 6 light and even coats of the Looking Glass spray paint. It dries super fast, so you don’t have to wait but maybe a few minutes in between coats.
2. Then I sprayed a little bit of black spray paint in spots just here and there. This is done just so that you get some dark spots showing through after you complete the next step.
3. Once the black spray paint was dry I sprayed a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water.
4. Then I sprayed another light coat of the Looking Glass spray paint and used a dampened paper towel to lightly dab/blot in places.
That’s it! This created the prettiest finish that is really hard to photograph. When you use the above technique on glass you get more of a true mercury glass look but on ceramic and metal you get a cool pewter-y antique-y look. I totally dig it!
I really love the new look of our old nativity set!
Come check out the fun place card holders I recently made with Krylon’s Looking Glass Spray Paint. Have you tried this paint yet? It’s kind of addicting!
Oh, wow! This is great. I really love Krylon – it can do incredible things!
I love the new look of your nativity set! I have been looking for Krylon Looking Glass for months and cannot find it anywhere. Have a number of projects I’m dying to do.
Wonderful! I love how versatile Looking Glass is, too. Not just for glass.
I’ve also recently gotten into Krylon’s ‘triple thick crystal clear glaze’ spray paint. It makes everything shiny 🙂
Ooo, fun! I will have to check that out.
