My Secret Obession

Ok so I have an obsession. It is kind of dorky. But I love factory tours. I once went to the Coors Brewery in Colorado. I don’t drink beer but I love learning the process of how things come to be. I love that show on the cooking channel “Good Eats.” They show the prcoess of how things are made. It fascinates me. Love the Jelly Belly factory, Hershey Factory, Brewery Tours, etc. So in Hawaii we went on two factory tours. One was to Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory and the other was the Maui Pineapple Tour. My fave was the pineapple tour. I learned so much useless knowledge about pineapples that I will share with you.

1. Pineapples grow from the ground. I totally thought they were on a tree like coconuts.
2. 14% of the west coast market is Maui Pineapples.
3. The yummy pineapple at Costco is Maui Pineapple.
4. When you plant a pineapple plant you get three separate harvesting periods.
5. The first harvest they can get a 12 oz can of pineappple, the second harvest an 8 oz can and the last harvest a 4 oz can.
6. The first harvest doesn’t happen until 18 months after you first plant.
7. When you plant a pineapple plant it grows for 3 years and then you start over.
8. They harvest every pineapple by hand.
9. They are naturally chilled when you eat it.
10. Once you plant a pineapple you can’t plant anything else there because it saps all the nutrients out of the soil.

So not only did I learn all that but I ate pineapple until my tongue stung. Here are a few pictures and a video of Carlos cutting a pineapple. If you ever go to Maui you have to go on the tour. Tell Carlos I sent you. https://mauipineapple.com/
