Drywall mudding ain’t easy.  I ended up putting four coats of mud on my bathroom walls and letting it dry 24 hours in between each coat..it tried my patience I tell ya.  Since it was my first time mudding and I tend to be a tad anal when it comes to stuff like that I wanted it perfect.  Well I think it looks pretty good for my first time.  I am so glad it was a few small spots and not the whole bathroom.  Whoa…that would have taken me forever

I just put primer over the spots and I am testing the colors I chose from Home Depot on the wall right now.  I drove all over town yesterday looking at all the swatches of the colors my readers recommended.  In the end, I didn’t listen went this route…

Behr Paint, Finish: Eggshell, Color: Sonatasonata

Behr Paint, Finish: Eggshell, Color: Cumberland Fog

cumberland

One color will be the wall color and the other will be the ceiling and closet color.  I normally don’t paint the closets but since the shelving is already out I figured I might as well.

I have both strips on the wall to see which color I want to be my dominant color.

scenario2 ….or darker walls, with lighter ceiling?

I promise I will listen to one of my reader’s advice on this one…haha!

  1. Depends – do you have high ceilings and want to bring them down for a warmer cozy feel – then dark ceiling – if you have low ceilings and want the room to feel more open then lighter ceiling. I personally prefer the darker of the two colors – especially on your wall – so I would probably go for the darker richer tone on the bulk of the walls and leave the lighter color for ceiling and closets. Will this color choice flow to the walls of your Master Bedroom or just for the bathroom?

  2. They're both lovely choices my dear. The darker ceiling will make it seem lower, I think, but I like that design choice. The paler ceilign will make it more airy. You can't go wrong with either, they are excellent color choices. So soothing !

  3. I like the darker color swatch on the wall a little better BUT I tend to err lighter on bathroom wall paint because color can read more intense in a smaller room such as a bathroom. Ergo, I'd go with light walls/dark ceiling.

  4. darker walls, Lighter celing will make the room look taller and the darker color on the walls will look lighter once it is on the walls.

  5. I like the lighter color for the walls – keeping the room airy and feeling larger. Thus my vote is for dark on the ceiling, and I think it would be a fun pop of color in the closet 🙂

    Great color choice btw!

  6. Hmmm….. I think I'd go with darker walls and lighter ceiling. But then, I tend to like bolder colors in small spaces; my kids' tiny bathroom has charcoal grey walls.

  7. You go girl! Wow, drywall mudding, I would have NO idea how to do that. If I ever need to, I'll just fly ya in to do it for me. 🙂 For the record, I like the lighter color on the ceiling. 🙂

  8. Lighter ceiling. The idea I think is darker ceiling "lowers" it…lighter ceiling "raises" it…Personally, I like the lighter ceiling better.

  9. When we built our new house, all the upstairs bathrooms were painted Sonata. I LOVED it! I would put the lighter color on the ceiling. It will make the room "feel" larger.

  10. From those pictures, I like the darker ceiling and lighter walls! Oh, I can only imagine how anxious you were to get the wall finished….4 days and 24 hours between waiting on drying…oh my!!

  11. I like the darker ceilings but I also think you need more contrast. Either a darker dark or a lighter light. . .

  12. It totally depends on the feel you want in here — and how much light you have. If you have 8 foot ceilings and little light, the lighter blue for sure. Higher ceilings and lots of light, the darker will work fine. You usually want to go either the same color or a tad lighter on "normal" sized ceilings.
That being said — if your bathroom looks like that picture, totally go for the darker — love that! 🙂

  13. I like the darker walls with light ceiling – makes the room look bigger/ceiling higher. Love the colors you picked!

  14. dark walls, light ceiling. Will 'lift' the space a bit. In a larger room, maybe the reverse. In a bath, I'd want the illusion of more space.
The blues are wonderful, tranquil & serene. Perfect choices!

  16. I'm really into painting ceilings these days. That said, if I am going to paint it I really like it to stand out so I'd go w/ the darker color on the ceiling! Good luck!

  17. You do realize you said dark ceiling in both questions you asked, right? Are you trying to trick us? 🙂
I like the dark walls, lighter ceiling…..:)

  18. It depends upon how high your ceilings are. I have a pitched ceiling in my bedroom. I painted it a few shades darker than the wall color to visually bring the ceiling down. In one of my bathrooms (8ft walls), I painted the ceiling and the walls the same color to add height. In my laundry room (also 8 ft walls) I painted the ceiling lighter than the wall color and the room feels a little closed in.

  19. I like the light ceiling better… which is not the choice in my own home but with those colors, it looked better 🙂

  20. I have always been a light ceiling girl, I see comments for both ways. The photos seems to work with the light. Good luck.

  21. My vote is for darker walls, lighter ceiling. Whatever you decide on, I know it will be perfect either way! Good Job!

  22. Hey Beckie,
I saw that you are going to use Eggshell for your bathroom. Our bathrooms have always been painted with a Satin finish because of all the steam in the bathroom from showers. However, the last time I painted the guy at Home Depot told me I would be fine using an Eggshell finish. I was a little reluctant, but I took his word. Anyway, long story short, it looks like the paint is dripping down our walls now. It never did that before, so Aaron and I both think it is the Eggshell finish. Maybe we are wrong, but I just thought I would mention it.

  23. I have the exact lighter color in my master bedroom on the walls. It is great! But, i would go with the darker walls, lighter ceiling to make it feel more airy and large!

  24. The LIGHTER ceiling gives sooo much more height to the room. The dark ceiling seemed squashy. Good luck deciding that's just my feeling. Both would be fine.
Oh and on the eggshell issue do not use it in a bathroom—torture to clean and will not do well with the steam etc.

  25. The lighter ceiling makes the room seem bigger.

Darker ceiling seems cozy & smaller.

Depends on what you're going for.

    Like the colors.
    Love your site!

  26. For me I would prefer dark walls, lighter ceiling. Nice colors you have their, I so love the color blue. Good luck with your renovation and maybe you can post the result after.

  27. Light ceiling for sure! It reflects a lot of light and you want good lighting in the bathroom. Our guest bath is a deep cocoa color and although I normally abhore white ceilings, we did them in a very stark eggshell white, and I love it. The light bounces off nicely and it brightens the entire room.

  28. Lighter ceiling for sure. Makes me feel like I could just fly out of there into the sky. K, that probably sounds weird. Haha….

  29. Lighter ceiling!

BUT you should go several steps lighter in a color family for this to be noticable (learned the hard way). Here's why: since the ceiling is at a different angle than the wall (likly flat) the shadow will cause it to read darker in the first place. So if for example you used all the same color wall/ceiling the ceiling would actually look a bit dark. I learned this trick from an architect. Also, to keep your ceiling from looking like it has a white sheet up top but if you want a "white" look, go with the very lightest shade on the card. It will read white on the ceiling but with have the undertone of your wall color that will add a touch of harmony that make it look like it was done by a pro.
