poinsettia pillow

Welcome to Day 1 of the Pennywise Presents series that runs every November here at IC.   All month long we will be sharing handmade gifts for under $10.   Today we have Jessie over at Imperfectly Polished sharing a pillow tutorial that you can embellish and interchange with numerous different snaps options.   I have a huge love for “interchangeable”.   It is the gift that keeps giving every season when you change the look of the pillow completely.

Hi IC Readers! I’m Jessie and I blog over at Imperfectly Polished where I share stories in DIY, sewing, and crafts. Beckie’s Pennywise Presents series is a perfect time for me to visit because my husband and I are probably some of the cheapest people you’ll ever meet. If you need some cheap DIY ideas, we’ve got plenty! Today I’m sharing a fun pillow that would be a great gift for any occasion inspired by my favorite pair of shoes.

Yes, the buttons are adorable, but one of the coolest things about them is that they can completely change into a different pair of shoes when you add these sweet bows:

Fun, right? Well, I took the same method and used it for some home decor. If you’ve ever seen Rachel Ray cook, she always talks about taking the method and “switching it up a million different ways.” Same goes for this little gift idea. You could put snaps on sweaters, headbands, just about anything. Super simple and very functional. For my version today, I started with a simple white envelope pillow {you can see how I make them here}.

Then I added a pretty monogram using a freezer paper stencil and placed my first flower in the upper corner of the pillow. I hand stitched a snap onto the upper corner of the pillow and also on the back of each flower.

I made one flower for each season {so they can display your gift year-round} using felt to make my flowers, but any fabric or design will work.

Spring:

Summer {sunflower}:

Fall {mum}:

Winter {poinsettia}:

Ready for the price breakdown? I had the felt and white fabric around the house from other projects, but you can probably get enough felt for all 4 flowers for less than $2.00 and some inexpensive muslin for the pillow case for around $2.00 also. I bought my snaps during an outing at Wal Mart for $2.50 so you can definitely get this pillow done for less than $10! Now, get out, buy some snaps, and start giving yourself some options. Thanks for having me, Beckie! I’d love for you to stop by and visit me at Imperfectly Polished!
