Hi there! I’m Shayna from The Wood Grain Cottage and I’m back again to share another project with ya! It would be safe to say that I really love plank walls (see here, here and here) … so much in fact, that I recently decided to make a wood plank door for our pantry. We’ve been working on our mudroom, so it only made sense to make a new door while we were at it, especially since our pantry is in our mudroom. I must say, I’m completely in love with it! It’s just what our mudroom was missing…
Here’s how we made it… We started with a basic flat panel door…
Then, we marked the spots for the hinges…
Anthony used a router to notch them out…
Then we set the hinge in place…
Once all the hinges were on, we trimmed the door to fit vertically in our existing door jam…
Then Anthony started measuring an equal spacing for the planks…
For the planks, we use 1/4″ flooring underlayment. It comes as a 4″ x 8″ sheet and we use our table saw to rip them down to 5 1/2″ wide…
We started in the middle with our first plank…
And to secure it to the door, we squeezed wood glue on the back of the plank…
Then used our nail gun to secure them in place…
For equal spacing, we used nickels…
Once we had the other planks in place, we started on the hole for the door knob. Anthony measured the hole, then drew a circle…
He used the router to cut it out…
Then, we glued and nailed the plank in place…
We also had to notch around the hinges in order for the plank to fit…
Once all the planks were secured in place, we were left with this…
We hung it back up with the existing hinges…
Then, I started filling and sanding the nail holes…
After I wiped down the door, I gave it three coats of Super White by Benjamin Moore…
And I added the previous door handle…
With that, it was ready to use!
I am so thrilled with how it turned out! I love that it’s a bit different from the other doors, but still blends in…
Plus, I knew it would look simply fabulous with a boxwood wreath…
Now, I’m on the hunt for a new/ unique door knob, but for now, I’m loving how everything looks together…
Our little mudroom has come such a long way… and I’m almost ready to start adding in all the small details that brings at all together…. Until next time… You can find me on Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter! And be sure to stop by The Wood Grain Cottage to say hi!
