I have finally figured out the nicest HelloFresh cream base sauce and I have made it better! Well, if you like my secret Twist that is.
Some people get confused with this sauce being cheese based but it is not originally. No cheese goes into the ingredients lol.
Another name for it is bechamel sauce originated in France. It is one of their most important sauces!
However, needless to say that by adding any cheese or even cream cheese you can make it “cheesy” as well.

My gut health journey makes me question exactly the same question every time a recipe catches my eye: Can it be made Gluten and Dairy Free?
And most of the time the answer is Yes!
Gluten And Dairy Free Cream Base Sauce Ingredients
These amounts will make the sauce really thick so, if that is your preference, then great! This consistency is great to use it with meats or as complement on a dish.
However, if you want to use it with pasta, I’d double the milk to 2 cups or, keep adding until you find the consistency you like.
- Organic Oat Milk (or regular milk) – 1 Cup
- Vegan Butter (or regular butter) – 1/4 Cup
- Gluten Free Flour (or normal) – 1/4 Cup
- Salt & Pepper – To taste
- Nutmeg – To taste
- Optional ingredient: 1 grated onion.
How to Make the HelloFresh Cream Base Sauce

I personally LOVE onion in everything plus it is really good for your health and, generally, cheap so it is a no brainer. Even if you choose to use cheese, still a great combination.
Just grate the onion so the bits are minimal.
Step 1 – Melt the butter
Pour the butter in a saucepan at medium heat until it melts.
Step 2 – Add the onion
Skip this step if you choose not to use the twist.
We want to brown the onion in the butter. I also add salt and pepper and nutmeg at this stage and adjust again later.
Keep stirring and don’t let it unattended. It burns very easily so adjust the heat as required depending on your stove.
Step 3 – Throw the flour
Literally and quick. There is no way it is going to make a smooth creamy mix. That is a myth.
It’ll get lumpy straightaway even if you try hard to avoid this so the next step of adding the milk is actually nearly simultaneous.

Step 4 – Mix in the milk
You want to add the milk already heated up. If you have forgotten to do that and your paste is in the hob looking at you with a dirty look, just stop the process and take it off the heat for a minute.
Never use the milk from the fridge!
Step 5 – Mix, mix, mix
Using the whisk keep mixing as there is no tomorrow until the ingredients are all incorporated. it will happen really fast (hence easy and quick cream sauce recipe).
Step 6 – Adjust spices
Now I always add more of the spices and keep trying until happy with it. Give it the last whisk.
Is this Cream Sauce Base Good for Pasta?
Absolutely! BUT, my advice is that if you are going to use it for pasta dishes, you double the amount of milk in this recipe.
So, instead of 1 Cup, add 2 Cups OR, after adding the first one, keep adding milk until the consistency is good for you.
I use it for pasta and normally add 2 cups of milk.
Can you Freeze the HelloFresh Cream Base?
Absolutely yes! No problem whatsoever. Now, my humble opinion? It is so quick to make that it is not worth it.
You only need to have the ingredients ready. Your milk heated up. And Boom! 3 minutes and the sauce is ready to serve.
What Can You Use as Substitute for the HelloFresh Cream Base?
Hmmm, my best friend asked me that exact question when I told her about this new blog post.
I don’t think you can substitute other than the color. For example using yogurt or cream cheese… but this cream base is unique with these ingredients.
My advice is to try and substitute some ingredients in the recipe itself but substituting the whole sauce…well, then it is another sauce you have.
