Hulu is the only place to find the full classic animated series The Powerpuff Girls which first debuted in 1998. To showcase the news that all 80 episodes are available on Hulu I am partnering with them to show you a quick project I did with Kayla – a handmade Powerpuff Girls skirt .
Kayla loves to sew. She taught herself how to use a sewing machine at age 6. She is still a beginner. We tried sewing lessons last year but she was too shy to be a in a group environment. So we have been using the book her sewing teacher used and just making our way through the projects. It has been fun to do together. Of course I could have whipped out this skirt in like 30 minutes but it takes a bit longer when you are helping press the seams, and pinning it all correctly. But I love the sense of pride of making something with my own two hands. And I want to pass that onto my daughter.
I snagged the Powerpuff Girl fabric on ebay for $5. A few more years and this fabric would be considered vintage. 🙂
I made a size 6x skirt. Measure your daughter’s hips and then cut the fabric 2 1/2 times that width. Measure from waist to knee and add 4″. That will be your height. Cut out a rectangle that size. Mine ended up being 19 x 50″
With right sides together sew a tube. Press the top down 1/2″ and then press it down 1 1/2″ skew the casing leaving a 2″ opening. Cut your elastic 1″ wider than the waist measurement. Thread it through the casing with a safety pin.
Sew the two ends of the elastic together. Sew casing closed. Hem the bottom and you are done.
I also printed the Powerpuff Girls onto iron-on-transfer paper and transferred it onto a $5 Target t-shirt.
Here is a close-up of the skirt. It was such a simple skirt to make, even for an 8 year old.
ABOUT THE POWERPUFF GIRLS ON HULU – watch the trailer
As one of Cartoon Network’s most enduring original series, the initial run of The Powerpuff Girls, created by Craig McCracken, premiered in 1998 and quickly became a global phenomenon. Since its premiere, the series earned two Emmy® Awards along with five nominations and countless animation honors throughout its 80 episodes.
The Powerpuff Girls centers on three sugar-coated superheroes, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, whose missions in life alternate between going to school, fighting crime, winning at hopscotch and saving the world before bedtime. The girls are frequently called upon by the town’s mayor to help fight nearby criminals using their powers. While their differences cause them to squabble and tease, their individual strengths combined always lead them to victory. They rely on teamwork, trust, and friendship to thwart evil (in the most adorable way).
