This week on The CSI Project the weekly theme is a dollar store project.  My submission isn’t mind blowing but it is nice to have some decor for $1 that works in any vignette in my house.  Visit thecsiproject.comI got a couple of these birds at my local Dollar Tree last year…

I spray painted them white…

They looked like porcelain.  I have loved them for a year painted white but I wanted to add a little interest to them.  I took some turquoise Rub N’ Buff to them.DSC05926 The thing I like about Rub N’ Buff is it is perfect to give lowlights to a project.  The Rub N’ Buff gets into the crevices and adds some color whereas a color glaze colors all the surfaces a little.  After you buff it the color is only in the crevices.  Perfect for the look I was going for.

  2. I did this same thing last year, painted them white. I am loving the turquoise! I can never find that shade in my local craft stores. What a fab change!

    Visiting from CSI!

  3. Where do you buy your Rub n' Buff? Our local craft stores don't seem to have it…

  4. omg. i have never hear of that stuff before but I NEEEEEEED IT! thanks so much for sharing this.

  5. Birds are "all the rage" – they have been "in" for awhile, but I continue to see them – especially in fabrics, pillows, wall art… I was at "See Sissy Sew" (formerly Aunt Tam's) in Battle Ground today and they had little birds that size (but not painted special like yours) attached to an outdoor branch (presumably with glue)and they had added just a tuft of nesting material and some moss and were selling them for $9.99 – just something to set upon your mantel or as a centerpiece or on a hallway table – very cute!

  6. So cute, and yet another great use for AMACO's Rub 'n Buff. I never would have thought to use on something like this. Your readers can find Rub 'n Buff at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, art supply stores, and all colors on the AMACO website. Can't wait to see your next project!

  7. Oooh, I loooove it! I have been wanting some fun lil' birds, but haven't seen any plain ones. Been wondering how to fix some up I saw at goodwill.

Never heard of Rub n Buff, but now I have reason to use my 40% off Michaels coupon!

  8. Oooohhh… liked them white, but I really like them with that rub and buff or whatever…. may have to give that a try! Does it work best on a ceramic surface?

  9. What a great idea! I saw those at the store but didn't know what to do with them!

  11. Love the birds… I thought the white one was pretty, but I think your rub-n-buff one is more interesting. Great submission to CSI!

  12. I too have some of these birds that I have not done anything with. Thanks for the inspiration. I probably should have tried this rub n buff stuff on a project that didn't turn out so well that i am posting tomorrow. Next time.

  13. These are so cute. I love the idea of turquoise instead of a brown. So much more fun!
