Happy Labor Day. Hopefully you have the day off and are enjoying your time with loved ones. My kids are just stoked for a day off school to spend hanging with friends by our pool. Speaking of school, we have been back in session for three weeks now. The reading logs are in full effect. My son is always looking for books that capture his attention. One of his favorite series is Captain Underpants (they are accelerated reading level 4.3 – 5.3). And the author, Dav Pilkey just came out with the 12th book in the series called “Captain Underpants and the Sentsational Saga of Sir Stinks-A-Lot.”

Supplies:
toilet paper roll
red polka dotted fabric (I couldn’t find black dots so I settled ofr white) from Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores
“Reading Gives your Super Powers” printable
1. Press the sides of the empty toilet paper in making sure they are pressed evenly. Glue the edges and sse a clothespin to hold it in place until it is dry.
2. Once dry flatten and cut out the shape of Captain Underpants head.
3. Using mine as a guide, draw Captain Underpants face and underpants with a black sharpie marker.
4. Using the template as a guide cut out the cape. Use pinking shears to cut the bottom edge.
5. Tie it on your Captain Underpants toilet paper holder. The front of the fabric should face forward. Cut excess. You will have to manipulate the fabric on the cape strings to have them face forward.
6. Cut out your “Reading Gives your Super Powers” printable. Using a glue stick, glue it onto your candy.
7. Put your candy inside.
This would be a fun craft to do with your kiddos once they finish the new book. Foster that obsession with reading, it is so valuable for your kiddos.
Here is more information about the book:
George, Harold, and their doubles, Yesterday George and Yesterday Harold, have a good thing going. Two of them go to school, while the other two hide in the tree house and play video games all day–then they switch! But when their malicious gym teacher, Mr. Meaner, creates a method of mind control that turns their fellow students into attentive, obedient, perfect children, the future of all humanity will be in their hands!
About the Author: When Dav Pilkey was a kid, he suffered from ADHD, dyslexia, and behavioral problems. Dav was so disruptive in class that his teachers made him sit out in the hall every day. Luckily, Dav loved to draw and make up stories, so he spent his time in the hallway creating his own original comic books.
In the second grade, Dav Pilkey created a comic book about a superhero named Captain Underpants. His teacher ripped it up and told him he couldn’t spend the rest of his life making silly books.
Fortunately, Dav was not a very good listener.
Dav continues to create books in the Pacific Northwest where he lives with his wife. Visit him online at www.pilkey.com.
