Micke desk handle and top

As an Ikea fan and a crazy craft lady, I can’t help it and I am going to make the best Ikea Micke desk hack ever. I feel so crafty when the fall is coming! It is time to get these hands to work.

A couple of years ago my daughter was using this Ikea Micke small desk but as she got a bit older, it obviously got too small for her. What did we do? Store it for future inspiration!

Micke waiting to receive some love

The time has come and I am making a beautiful creation – it is brewing in my brain right now – that I’ll probably try and sell later (sorry but I am thrifty after all).

SMALL MICKE DESK ON A BUDGET!

This one is the smallest of all Micke as there are upgraded versions. It is only 28 3/4″ (73cm) wide with one drawer. Costs $49.

It is also a Best Seller!

Ours seems to be a special edition in white-pink since it is not on sale anymore and the only options are white, black-brown and oak-effect.

INSPIRATION FROM THE OUTSIDE WORLD – IDEAS

I gotta be honest, haven’t found much inspiration sadly. So hoping my future creation will help to fill the void. I am torn between transform it into what it originally is: a desk or maybe a vanity.

ADDING A KEYBOARD TRAY

One option is to get rid of the drawer and insert a keyboard tray which sounds great if you want to use it just as a computer table. However, I think the drawer comes handy and if you use it with a laptop, you don’t really need the tray.

You can find the full instructions in this post should you be interested.

ADDING A HANDLE AND THE COLOR TOP

This one looks really interesting. Just adding a nice handle like this and using Wood Contact Paper just on the top it gives a total different look. Not sure though with my pink legs, hmmm.

USING CHALK PAINT

This one here is the following Micke with a side cabinet but it is good to see the new color in the drawer and cupboard door. Not sure again how that looks with my metal pink legs but a great option for the classic Micke.

I made a PERSONALIZED CORAL DESK project using chalk paint so kind of an expert in this matter.

USING FABRIC

This one has really wowed me, I love it! Just sticking a beautiful fabric to the drawer (I don’t have the side add-on, remember). It looks great. See full step by step instructions here.

USING PAPER – DECOUPAGE

I think this could be the winner. Still have lots of beautiful craft paper somewhere stored and it could look great! I was really interested in Decoupage before but didn’t get into it fully.

I made these DECOUPAGED BALLS but it was a very small project.

In case you haven’t heard about it, decoupage or decoupage is basically the art of decorating an object using colored paper cutouts and glue in combination with other decorative elements. You can make wonders!

This picture below, again, is not the little Micke but it is good enough to see the potential outcome. In fact, it is the Universe telling me this is the option to take and create a Decoupaged Small Micke Desk.

I’ll have a think about it but nearly convinced to go for the decoupage maybe in combination with chalk paint and adding a handle, so basically using all these ideas together! Stay tuned.
