Wake up your creative juices, and get ready for the Vintage-Inspired, Modern Style Design Challenge! Created by my friend Amy Barickman (of Indygo Junction and The Vintage Workshop), this Project Runway-style design challenge is being hosted on BurdaStyle.com/vintagemodern and sponsored by SINGER and Coats & Clark.

Fashion enthusiasts will use their sewing skills and creativity to make a wearable fashion project that’s based on an existing pattern. Pattern choices can be seen on Indygo Junction and include any Indygo Junction pattern, any of the 12 vintage patterns found in Amy’s book, Vintage Notions, or one of four free downloadable, vintage ePatterns. Participants should alter the original design in some way to make it a new, unique look.

Prizes for the challenge include a Limited Edition SINGER 160 sewing machine, sewing goodies from Coats & Clark, books and patterns from Indygo Junction, and the chance for your pattern design to be published internationally!

The motivation behind the challenge is to celebrate the history of sewing by recognizing both SINGER ® and Coats & Clark, who are both celebrating significant anniversaries this year (160th and 200th, respectively);as well as educate and inspire through the life and work of Mary Brooks Picken, the authority on fashion and dressmaking in the early and mid-1900s. Mary’s work was also the basis for Amy’s book, Vintage Notions.

Learn more by watching the Vintage Notions video on AmyBarickman.com, which shares Mary’s history & dives deeper into the projects, departments & materials you will find within its pages. The deadline for project submissions is Monday, March 12th at 11:59 pm (EST), and the winners will be announced Monday, March 26th, so get busy!! As an extra incentive, Indygo Junction is offering a one-time 20% coupon on your entire purchase. Just enter the code VMCB at checkout. Good luck!
