There’s a definite chill in the air when I step outside my door, these days.  Winter is coming, and even indoors I’m starting to wear my fuzzy socks again.  Pretty soon, snow will be falling outside, and I’ll be ready to stay inside with a warm cup of cocoa, my favorite shelter mags, and my comfy old sweatshirt.  (Tell me I’m not the only one who has one of those! )  Few things are more comfortable than a sweatshirt, so it makes perfect sense to refashion the workhorse of winter wardrobes into something that looks as good as it feels.  You’ll love trying on these five ways to make an old sweatshirt new again.

1.  Customize It

This is a fun way to personalize a plain sweatshirt that I shared recently here at Infarrantly Creative.  Find out how I got the fun “ransom note” look with lots of different letters from old tee shirts.

2.  Add Fun Fabric

Take a look at this cute hoodie makeover from Uncommon.  I love how Bonnie dressed up a plain hoodie with the addition of pretty fabric.  Just dressing up the sweatshirt with a contrasting fabric makes this a versatile wardrobe piece that can be worn further from home than the mailbox.

3.  Make it a Coat

I found this great tutorial for turning a bulky sweatshirt into a cute, double-breasted pea coat at Sisters Sisters.  The addition of big buttons and a contrasting collar really make this refashion something special.

4.  Turn it into a Blazer

I never realized classy blazers and comfy sweatshirts had anything in common until I saw this sweatshirt refashion from Dee*Construction.  The details on this one are absolutely amazing–just check out those sleeves!  You have to check out the before picture, otherwise you’ll have a hard time believing this trendy blazer used to be a pullover.

5.  Let it be a Vest

I Make Stuff created this darling girl’s vest from a cast-off sweatshirt, and she has a tutorial so you can make one, too.  This is a great way to get more use out of a piece that might have stained or worn sleeves.

I’d love to hear any ideas you’ve had for making ordinary clothes extraordinary–especially the cozy clothes, now that winter is around the corner.
