5 Ways to make a tiered cake stand
A tiered cake stand can be the centerpiece of special occasions, adding elegance and charm to your dessert presentation.
While you can find amazing cake stands or tiered trays at high-end stores and bakeries, they often come with a steep price tag. Such purchases can be quite confusing too. The international shipping charges might be over the top for certain product pages, especially if there are custom tariffs to add!
However, there is a budget-friendly alternative – making your own tiered cake stand. With a few simple materials and tools, you can create a beautiful, personalized stand that is perfect for showcasing your baked creations.
Not only is this option more affordable, but it also allows for customization and the satisfaction of a DIY project.

How do you make a homemade cake stand?

I mean… imagination is key here. I have seen as simple as cardboard crafted or as sophisticated as copper plates. Here below some ideas that might light the bulb for you:

  • Wooden rounds: You can find these in various sizes at a craft store or online. They can be painted or stained to match your decor.
  • Cardboard rounds: Cut from cardboard boxes, these can be covered with decorative paper or paint. They’re lightweight and easy to work with.
  • Glass plates: You can stack glass plates of varying sizes to create a tiered stand. They can be clear, frosted, or colored for added interest.
  • Ceramic plates: Like glass plates, ceramic plates of different sizes can be stacked to create a tiered stand. You can also find plates with decorative designs.
  • Candlesticks: You can use a combination of candlesticks and plates to create a unique and customizable tiered stand.
  • Wood slabs: If you have access to woodworking tools, you can cut and sand wooden slabs to create your own tiered stand.
  • PVC pipes: PVC pipes can be cut and assembled to create a sturdy stand for your cake.

What type of cake stand is best?

Making DIY cake stands can be fun but can also narrow down to different purposes. That is always going to depend on your specific needs and preferences. Here are some factors to consider:

  1. Material: Different materials, such as glass, ceramic, metal, or wood, each have their own look and feel. Choose one that complements your decor and personal style.
  2. Size and Height: Consider the size of your cake and the height you want for your stand. A taller stand can make a bold statement, while a shorter stand can be more understated.
  3. Stability: The stability of the stand is important, especially if you have a heavier cake. A sturdy stand with a wide base can help prevent accidents.
  4. Purpose: If you plan to use the stand for multiple events, consider a stand that can be easily disassembled and stored. If you only plan to use it once, a more decorative option may be appropriate.
  5. Budget: Cake stands can range in price from a few dollars to hundreds of dollars. Consider your budget when choosing a stand. (See a few options to buy at the end of the post).

That’s why I bring you some fresh ideas to make your own 🙂 Let’s go.

Materials and Tools Needed for Your DIY Cake Stand

As a DIY enthusiast, one of the most exciting parts of any complicated or simple project is gathering the materials and tools needed to bring my vision to life. When it comes to making your own DIY cake stand, here are the essentials you’ll need:

  • Plates: Choose three plates of different sizes to create the tiers of your cake stand. Opt for sturdy materials like ceramic or glass that can safely hold the weight of your cakes.
  • Dowels or Pillars: These are the support structures that will hold the tiers in place. You can use wooden dowels, plastic pillars, or even a couple of candlesticks for a unique touch.
  • Adhesive: To secure the cake plates and dowels together, you’ll need a strong adhesive suitable for the materials you’re working with. Epoxy or food-grade adhesive is ideal for this purpose.
  • Drill: If you’re using wooden dowels or candlesticks, a drill will be necessary to create holes in the center of the wood cake plates for the dowels to go through. Make sure to use the appropriate drill bit size for a snug fit.

However, there are also affordable options available, such as DIY tiered cake stands made from materials like cardboard or wood, which can cost much less. If you don’t want to make your own, that is.

Safety Precautions

While crafting your own handmade cake stand can be a fun and rewarding experience, it’s essential to prioritize safety. Here are some precautions to keep in mind:

  • Protective Gear: Wear safety goggles and gloves when drilling or handling potentially sharp objects to protect your eyes and hands.
  • Ventilation: If you’re using adhesives or coats of paint, ensure you’re working in a well-ventilated area to prevent inhaling fumes.
  • Proper Tool Handling: Familiarize yourself with the proper handling and usage of any tools you’ll be using, especially if you’re not experienced with them. Follow manufacturer instructions and take necessary precautions.

Troubleshooting Tips

Sometimes, things don’t go as planned during a DIY project. Here are a few troubleshooting tips to help you overcome common challenges when making a DIY cake stand:

  • Uneven Plates: If your plates aren’t sitting level, try using small adhesive dots or silicone pads between the plates and dowels to create stability.
  • Wobbly Stand: If your cool cake stand feels wobbly, double-check that the dowels are securely fastened to the plates. If needed, add more adhesive or use longer dowels for better stability.
  • Uneven Holes: If the holes drilled in your vintage plates or modern cake plates aren’t aligned properly, use sandpaper or a file to enlarge or reshape the holes to allow for a better fit.
  • Damaged Surfaces: If you accidentally scratch or damage the surface of your plates or dowels while working on your cake stand, you can use sandpaper or a gentle abrasive to smooth out the imperfections. Apply a thin layer of paint or sealant to restore the appearance.
  • Stains or Spills: In case of spills or stains on your plates, clean them immediately with a mild detergent and warm water. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that may damage the finish or design of your plates.

Wrapping Up the Tiers

Creating your own tiered cake stand can be a fantastic way to add personal touches at holiday parties, birthday parties, football parties, and more.

By gathering the necessary materials and tools, taking safety precautions, and troubleshooting any issues that arise, you’ll be well on your way to crafting a beautiful and functional cake stand. Enjoy the process, and have fun showcasing your homemade treats with style!

So, to be fair, depending on how often you actually throw parties with cakes…can be a God sent. Instead of keeping it stored,, just use it in your home!
