pink gray office inspiration 5 ways

Having a dedicated place to sit down and work, write, chat on the phone, or make lists is a luxury not all of us enjoy in our homes.  It’s called an office space, and those of us who have a dedicated room for home office work need to count our blessings!  There are ways to get around a lack of square footage, though, and this desk area that I spotted at Carla Aston Designed is one of them.  Update:  This room was featured on the link I just mentioned, but it actually belongs to my talented friend, Kate, the Centsational Girl.   This is her office, and she has lots of her own suggestions for how to make a room look as great as this one.  My apologies to Kate (and all of you) for not recognizing her work earlier!

This combination of desk, bookshelves, and an office chair just takes up one end of a room.  With furniture this nice, it could be part of a bedroom or even the living or dining room.  I love the use of stylish furniture that is fully functional without screaming “office supply store.”  Another thing I like about this room is the bright, fun pattern on the curtains–it keeps the gray and white pallet from being too dull.

Surprisingly enough, you don’t have to go to a designer showroom to get furniture like what’s pictured in the room above.  There are ways to get that look for less, and I’m about to show you five.

1.  Bookcase

Thanks to Ikea, you can get the look of nice, custom built shelving by doing a few simple things to dress up an inexpensive bookcase.  One of the best examples of turning an Ikea Billy bookcase into a shelf that looks a lot like the one in my inspiration photo is at Centsational Girl.

2. Painted Interior Doors

Interior doors are typically a wood grain or painted the same color as the trim.  Not in my inspiration room–check out that interesting gray door!  DIY Squirrel gives tips (and a paint color) for getting a similar look.

3.  White Desk Chair

Even the oldest office chair can be made to look new again!  You won’t believe how bad the before was of this chair at Teeny Ideas, but the makeover gives it a look very much like the chair in my inspiration room.

4.  X Leg Desk

The modern “X-leg” look is a trendy one right now in furnishings.  Designed to Dwell jumped on board the x-leg train recently, and transformed a much larger desk set into this beautiful new desk.

5.  Patterned Curtains

The curtains in my inspiration photo add a big dose of color and motion to an otherwise serene space.  Learn how to stencil your own version of these drapes at My Hands Made It.

You know what would be a fun addition to the desktop in this office space?  A quirky, sculptural organizer for office supplies, like this one!  What do you absolutely have to have in your office to survive?

  2. That’s a gorgeous work space! Mine is on my list of “re-dos”!! Soon! Thanks for some fabulous inspiration. 🙂

  3. I’m a huge fan of Gray, and I’m not a fan of Pink, but I instantly love the color combination of the two after seeing this post. The colors has a contrasting effect and it is really great to look at. Designing an office space should be based on our own personality, because it’s a reflection of who we are too.
