Rainbow Room 5 Ways

This focal wall in a bedroom featured by HGTV.com stopped me in my tracks!  How can you not take a second look at that fun rainbow striped wall?

It’s definitely eye-catching, and in some cases this much color and pattern might be too much to handle.  Luckily, the elegant, understated furnishings in front of the rainbow wall keep the space from feeling like a cartoon.

The striped wall, the bright colors, the refinished furniture–it’s all stuff I love.  So of course I had to look for some DIY tutorials to help you achieve a similar look for less.

Pike’s Place Blog installed a similar focal wall in their daughter’s room.  Check out the full tutorial and ideas for saving money (like using sample paint for the colorful stripes).

2. Ribbon Trimmed Curtains

Trimming plain, inexpensive curtains with grosgrain or satin ribbon is a simple way to dress them up.  Inspired Whims shows you how it’s done.

3. Bamboo Dresser

Love the look of this bamboo dresser?  You can find pieces like this on Craigslist and at thrift shops.  If you want to spruce up a dingy finish, follow the instructions at Urban Jane for refinishing.

4.  Colorful Chair

New upholstery and a fresh coat of paint can go a long ways towards make a dowdy chair look like a stylish new piece.  I like this chair makeover by  C.R.A.F.T., as featured at Roadkill Rescue.

5. Pretty Lamps

Lamps can be really expensive, if you buy them new.  Good news is, thrift stores are full of inexpensive lamps–they just might not be in the color you want.  So paint them!  The Frugal Homemaker offers her tips for spray painting lamps.  And if you are looking to spruce up your lampshades, too, check out my lampshade makeover tutorial.

Is a striped wall in your future?  Would you rather use wallpaper or paint to put a pattern on your walls?
