Maria from Delinda Boutique on Etsy emailed me wanting a place to feature her tutorial since she does not have a blog of her own. Of course she must have known this would feed my insatiable desire for pillows! I love these pillows because they are the perfect project to use some fabric scraps from your stash. Maria is all the way from Bulgaria so give her a big welcome to IC.![]()
Supplies:
4 various fabrics for the front (2 solid and 2 two patterned)
1 fabric for the back (cut out two of them at 13” x 13”)
sewing machine with coordinating thread
pillow form
rotary cutter and mat
optional: embroidery machine
1. My preferred size for a lumbar pillow is 12” x 18” so the size of each piece I cut is 13” x 4”. I followed the original idea combining two solid colored fabrics with two patterned pieces.
2. For the backs of both pillow covers I chose a cotton fabric in eggplant purple. I cut two pieces 13” x 13” for each pillow. This will create an envelope closure back.
3. When I sewed together the pieces for the fronts I added zigzag stitches in a contrasting color following my original inspiration photo.
4. And it was time for final touches. I felt something was missing. I chose not to make small patches over the solid panels like Horchow. So I made some simple embroidery designs instead. I did a floral design on the first pillow cover and free flowing lines on the second.
Then I sewed the front and back parts together finishing the pillow cover and I was so happy with the result!
And I couldn’t stop here. The next day I sewed these also! Somebody stop me I am on a patchwork pillow rampage! I am definitely making a dent into my fabric scrap bin.
