Barn Wood Frames {Roadkill Rescue}

I found some old fence slats in my neighbors trash a few months ago.  Seeing the beautiful weather beaten patina made me rush over and ask my neighbor if I could have them.  My neighbors are used to my trash picking by now, I think.  So I took some of those slats and stashed them in Roadkill Rescue center (a.k.a “my third car garage stall”) just waiting to be made into something.  This is a simple and easy project to create large barn wood looking frames out of old pallet wood or fence slats.  It helps to have two very adorable subjects to frame as well Winking smile

Supplies:

Chop saw or miter box and had saw

tape measure with pencil

wood joiners

hammer

wood glue

backerboard (sometimes called masonite) cut to size

nail gun

poster or picture

clamps

spray adhesive

old fence slats

1.  Remove all the old nails from the wood with a hammer.  Cut your wood slats to the size you need for your frame making a mitered 45 degree cut with your saw.

2.  On the wrong side glue the corners in place with wood glue and then pound wood joiners to hold them in place.  Then secure everything with some clamps to dry for a few hours.

3.  While that is drying spray your adhesive onto the back of your poster and the masonite and then press to seal it on.  Then tack it with a few staples onto your frame to hold it in place.

4.  No need to use use stain, paint or polyurethane when the weather does the work for you.

I absolutely adore the gray patina that was created by years of weather.  I think adding some old vintage elements into my normally traditional/modern décor is so fun and ads a little texture to my walls.

I have a pallet that I rescued the other day… and I’m making frames for them. I just have to get the Spring pictures of the kiddos printed out and then I will have them done too! :)

  5. These would look great with a bunch of Sepia photos that I’ve made. Also I’d add some colored finishing to it.

    These are gorgeous.

I love these frames. They turned out wonderfully. I have some extra boards I should leave outside to get weathered.
