Project #2 – You’ll be Green With Envy

The second project my wonderful FIL and hubby made for me were lockers for my mudroom. If you have a mudroom and don’t have these you will be green with envy. I am so excited about these. It will be so nice to walk in from the garage, take off our coats and shoes and store them in the lockers and then walk into the house. They cost well over $1000 at Pottery Barn. We made them for less than $150 (with loving labor for free of course).
Here is Daddy’s Little Helper hard at work

Here is a picture halfway through the project before the trim was on. This is the basic guts.

Here’s my two heroes of the weekend proudly standing next to their project.
I can’t get a picture of the whole thing head on for you because the room isn’t big enough to get my camera far enough. At the top opening I will be putting lined baskets where we will store mittens, gloves, scarves, hats and other miscellaneous treasures in. At the bottom I will be getting milk crates with casters on them to put our shoes in.

Now all I have to do is figure out something for this. . .

This is opposite the lockers and it ain’t working for me. I am not a big fan of wire shelving and it is everywhere in this house. So I am hoping to find some inexpensive cabinets (like seconds or mismatches) at a cabinet shop that I can paint white and hide all my cleaning junk in.

Isn’t the color fun? I got some $5 OOPS paint at Home Depot in this orangey, mustardy, pumpkin color. So this whole room was a bargain!

My inspiration came from Restyled Home’s lockers, this website, and the lockers from this JDS home.

  1. Those turned out really great!

  2. I looooooooove your mudroom! What a great idea;) But what if you have 3 kids? And I see I’m not the only one who likes to buy cleaning products … can’t resist those comercials. I guess I somewhat believe they will clean everyhting without me doinf anything !!! lol

Can’t wait to see project number 3 ;-) YOur FIL should come more often !!! lol

You need CABINETS for all the cleaning stuff. That’s what I have. My laundry room/mudroom rocks (and I can say that because it’s not my doing–it was part of the houseplan & our builder followed through!) because we have upper and lower cabinets all over…so everything’s behind closed doors. Which I love, because really…I’d be so embarrassed if everyone saw my obsession with plug-in refills. Not to mention the Swiffer refills, Swiffer duster refills, etc. :)

  4. Love, love, love that locker project – sure wish we had space in our laundry room for something like that or by our front door!

    Have a great week!

Am I a terribly greedy person, because the first thing I thought when I saw those awesome lockers was: “they could make a bunch of those and sell them for a lot of money….” (I guess that’s how Pottery Barn probably got started :) !). They look FABULOUS! I want them!

If you can’t find cabinets for your wire shelving dilemma–you can try what I did. I just hung a tension rod in front of my whole shelf mess, found some really cute pillow shams, and attatched them with clip rings. Now I have a cute little curtain to pull closed over the chaos. It might work till you can get to making/buying cabinets.

Your TV niche expansion was genius too! I love it!–and the blue color on your walls.

Cheers to you guys and all your projects!

  6. I am lovin’ those lockers! First, I need a mudroom – then I need to find someone to build lockers for me. $150 is incredible! Great job and thanks for sharing!

LOVE the lockers…in fact, that may be part of the answer for our mudroom that we have been slowly redoing… it’s the first room you walk in to, and it’s big…so I want it to look nice but it also has to be practical. all those shoes, coats, etc…I think I’m goint to ask Chris to build me some lockers! THANKS!!

  8. restyled home says:

Oh I am blushing…and partly from embarrassment!! I totally forgot to send you those measurements!! Please accept my apologies and know it wasn’t due to laziness…just forgetfulness!!

Either way, your FIL certainly didn’t need any help as yours turned out brilliantly!!
I love them and you must be sooo happy.

    Take care,
    Linda xoxo

  9. I love this and it was perfect timing as I was just thinking Nello could build some. Now I have some inspiration to show him!
    Thank you!!
